Move Outside, Part 2: Summer Training That Doesn't Feel Like a Chore
Share
Spring got you moving outside — now summer is here to test your commitment. The heat is real, the schedule is unpredictable, and the last thing you want is to feel like working out is one more thing on your to-do list.
Good news: it doesn't have to be. Summer training can actually be the most enjoyable season of your fitness year — if you approach it right.
Train Early or Train Late
The summer sun is not your friend between 10 AM and 4 PM. Shift your outdoor sessions to early morning or evening when temperatures drop and the light is golden. Bonus: early morning workouts set the tone for your entire day, and evening sessions are a perfect way to decompress.
Use the Environment as Your Gym
Summer gives you access to equipment you don't have in January — hills, trails, parks, pools, and open fields. Use them. Hill sprints build explosive power. Trail runs challenge your stabilizers. Swimming is full-body conditioning with zero joint impact. You don't need a gym membership to get an elite workout.
Make It Social
Grab a friend, a neighbor, or your kids and make movement a shared experience. A morning walk with a friend becomes accountability. A bike ride with your kids becomes a memory. When fitness is woven into your relationships, it stops feeling like a sacrifice and starts feeling like a life you love.
Hydration Is Non-Negotiable
Your performance drops significantly when you're even mildly dehydrated — and in summer heat, that happens faster than you think. Drink water before you feel thirsty. Add electrolytes if you're sweating heavily. Your body will thank you with better energy, better recovery, and better results.
Embrace the Imperfect Workout
Some days the heat wins. Some days the kids need you. Some days 15 minutes is all you've got. Take it. A short, intentional workout beats a skipped one every single time. Progress is built in the accumulation of consistent effort — not in perfect conditions.
Summer is short. Get outside, move your body, and soak up every bit of it. You were built for this season.
